Raising awareness of Gifts in Wills
08 March 2013
Gifts in wills are vital to the survival of many charities in the UK, a fact that many of their supporters simply don’t realise. To get people talking, Remember A Charity will be inviting daring diners to dice with death at Café de Mort, a brand new pop-up restaurant in London, to raise some much needed awareness about the importance of legacy giving.
Launched by MasterChef’s Gregg Wallace, Café de Mort will serve a range of deadly delicacies on 26 and 27 February, as part of a campaign to encourage more people to leave a gift to charity in their Wills. The menu remains a closely guarded secret but will feature delicacies from around the world. Each of the six dangerous dishes served will be potentially lethal if not prepared or cooked properly.
Remember A Charity, the consortium of 140 charities behind the campaign, hopes that diners will be reminded of the unpredictability of life and the importance of taking care of friends, family and the causes they hold dear. After all, nobody knows the importance of a having a Will more than someone who could be about to eat their last meal.
Matt Vincent, Cats Protection’s Senior Gifts in Wills Advisor, says “Whilst Café de Mort may seem a bit extreme to some people it is succeeding in the difficult task of getting people thinking about Wills and considering a gift to charity. Whilst three quarters of Britons regularly give to charity in their lifetimes, just 7% include a charity in their Will. So even though the whole idea of Café de Mort is meant to be a little tongue in cheek there’s a serious message too.”
“Here at Cats Protection, more than half of the cats we help are cared for thanks to the kindness of people who remember us in their Wills. If more supporters were to include Cats Protection in their Wills then we would be able to change the lives of even more cats in the future.”

) was formed in 2000 and now has over 140 member charities, who work together to encourage more people to consider leaving a gift to charities in their Will, after they’ve looked after their family and friends. Legacies (or gifts in Wills) form the foundation of charities in the UK. Many charities depend on legacies, without them, they would not exist.
